| 1836 Reeded Edge PCGS 30 A historically significant issue, the 1836 Reeded Edge is the first business strike Half Dollar produced on the Mint's new steam-powered coinage press. The occasion sparked a major redesign to John Reich's Capped Bust Half Dollar. The modifications were done by Christian Gobrecht, whose work is most readily distinguishable from the predecessor upon which it is based by a more refined 'look' to the devices and the omission of the Latin motto and scroll from the upper-reverse field. This modified Capped Bust design, which has since become known by the more generic term of 'Reeded Edge, ' was put to use before the end of 1836, although only 1, 200 examples are believed to have been delivered that year. With such a paltry original mintage, it should come as no surprise that the 1836 Reeded Edge is one of the most instantly recognizable keys to the entire U.S. Half Dollar series.
