Auction 2826, lot 1101:Three Cent Silver 1873 Proof Closed 3 NGC 67 * Superb Gem Proof. Deep mirror-like fields. Sharply contrasting heavily frosted devices. This coin has been star designated by NGC for exceptional eye appeal. The Three-Cent Silver series passed into history in 1873 with a delivery of just 600 coins from the Philadelphia Mint. All of those coins were Proofs and, although a good percentage of the mintage seems to have survived to the present day, though most examples are confined to the Proof-60 to Proof-64 grade range. Conditionally scarce as a Superb Gem, the coin in this lot is awash in stunning Rainbow hues. NGC has certified a mere two Proof coins at this level with none finer.
