Bullion $50 Gold

The $50 bullion gold American eagle contains exactly one ounce of pure gold, mixing an alloy of 91.67% gold, 3% silver amd 5.33% copper, with a weight of 33.931 grams. First struck in 1986, the denomination as been coined every year since, and until 1991 used a Roman numeral date. The obverse depicts the magnificent striding Liberty motif, conceived by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which many consider be one of the world's most beautiful coinage designs. Proofs have been offered by the Mint since its inception. Other than the classic $50 commemorative gold pieces struck in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, this is the first implementation of a $50 denomination gold coin by the U.S. Mint. The value of the gold content, however, far exceeds the coin's face value. Many collectors assemble sets of the series, with ultimate quality Proof-70 and Mint State-70 generating significant premiums. Reference books include: A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS by R.S.
